Simple Odia Lunch I Rice, Dal, Monkia n Papad I roshniscuisine

So frndz today we prppare simple Odia lunch…generally I send the lunch box for office, but that day Husband is coming home for lunch…so thought to prepare monkia (Odia Curry). And it is requested by my viewer Rajani Behera…his husband favourite. Suddenly it strikes to my mind why not do the recording and then thought as I dint start preparing the lunch why not do full recording of lunch…simple Odia Lunch platter. This monkia recipe I learn from my sweet mom and its my favourite too. So this recipe is dedicated to her. So lets get started…
Preparation Time 15 min
Cooking Time 35 to 40 min
Serving Persons 4 to 6

Ingredients Required

For Rice

1 n ½ cup rice
Salt to taste
Ample amount of water

For Tomato Dal

½ cup masoor dal
1/3 cup toor dal
1 large tomato cut into cubes
¼ tsp turmeric powder
¼ tsp ghee
2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
Salt to taste
For Tadka
1 tbsp ghee
1 whole red chili
1 tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds
a pinch of asafoetida

Roasted Papads
For Monkia

1 medium potato cut into wedges
1 medium length brinjal cut into 3 inch and slit
1 sweet corn cob cut into 3 inch parts
2 tbsp green peas
½ cup french beans cut into 1 inch
1 medium legth carrot cut into roundels
5 to 6 cauiflower florets
2 medium tomato chopped
3 green chili
¼ tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp monkia powder
Salt to taste

For Monkia Powder

1 cup udad dal
1/3 cup cumin seeds
1 tsp fennel seeds
10-12 fenugreek seeds
a pinch of asafoetida
12 to 15 whole red chili

For Tadka
1 tbsp oil
1 whole red chili
1 tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds
a pinch of asafoetida


Soak rice n dal for 1 hour atleast.


Boil ample amount of water…
When it start boiling add salt and rice.
When it is swollen n cooked,straint he water and its done.

Tomato Dal

Fill water in pressure cooker.
Take a vessel which is easily fit in cooker.
Now in that vessel  add dal, salt, turmeric powder ,tomato n ghee with water.
Cover this and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
Release the pressure and whisk the cooked dal and add coriander leaves.
Then heat ghee, add all tadka ingredients  to this.
When mustard seeds start crackle add this tadka to dal.


Dry roast the udad dal in low flame.
When it turns into golden colour, add rest ingredients  to this except asafoetida.
Finally add asafoetida and turn off the flame.
Let it cool down and grind this to coarse powder.

For Curry

Heat oil, add all tadka ingredients t o this.
When mustard seeds start crackle, add tomatoes and let it cook.
When it is little mushy in texture add green chili,salt n turmeric powder.
Now add  all veggies except cauliflower(as it took less time to cook)
Add hot water and let it cookf or some time.
Then transfer to pressure cooker and cook for 1 whistle.
Release the pressure and transfer to pan, now add the cauliflowers n cook it till all veggies done.
Add monkia powder and cook for some time.
Finally add chopped coriander leaves.
If y ou feel it is dry,add little hot water.

Dry roast the papad in low to med flame and coat oil on this.

Serve the simple yet delicious Odia Lunch and enjoy…


Soak the rice n dal for 1 hour…so that it take lwss time to cook and in this way less consume of gas.
Whenever you are preparing dal,cookt he dal in a vessel whish is easily fit in pressure cooker…in this way you can cook some curry  next time without making it dirty.
I have used more masoor dal comparing to toor dal as it is healthy and you cant differentiate in taste.
Add little oil or ghee to pulses so that it will not spill.
If you wish you can use little ghee while cooking rice.
I prefer to cook rice in a vessel rather than rice cooker ,in this way all startch gone.
You can prepare the fresh powder for monkia and use it instant…
If you are making in large quantity, store in air tight container to retian the flavour.
Whatever veggie available I use that for monkia , you can use turai,tondli,parval…etc.
